Sparking Inspiration for Your Orinda Home Through This Modern Wine Closet Design

Isn’t it exciting when you have that extra wall space that can cater to so many things and ignite so many lightbulb ideas? Well, for wine collectors like you who need wine storage, an extra wall can be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

If you’re into contemporary designs, a modern glass wine closet would be an excellent option to store and showcase your wine collection. With minimalist lines, and sleek, elegant finishes, a modern wine cellar will surely be a high value addition to your home and your growing wine investment!

Our lead custom wine cellar designer, Steve Pantalemon, had a chance to create an extraordinary wine closet in Orange County fit for 514 bottles of wine – and this is what you’ll be learning about in this article!

Steve is a design and construction specialist for wine cellars with years of experience building stylish residential and commercial wine storage units all over San Francisco and beyond, including San Jose, Sacramento, Sta. Clara, Orange County, San Diego, and more. He loves capturing his clients’ vision in his designs and deliver fully functional, quality, and stylish wine cellars, and here’s one of his remarkable creations done inside a beautiful home!

The Perfect Modern Wine Closet Design Display for Homes!

From Plain Cabinet to Modern Glass Wine Closet

Steve’s take on modern glass wine closets features sleek, contemporary glass panels that offer unobstructed views of an entire wine collection. From simple green cabinets, he was able to transform this unused space into a vibe-filled modern wine storage unit, complete with case storage, a magnum display area, reveal rows, and horizontal display racks.

Transforming this space into a masterfully designed modern wine closet was an experience to remember because we always ensure that clients are on the driver’s seat from day 1.

This newly transformed glass closet is 147”x 97.5” x 120” and goes deep to 28”. While naturally light enters unlimitedly through the glass, Steve added some warm LED lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The Indespensible Pairing of Wood and Metal in Contemporary Wine Cellars

Framed glass wine cellar doors and panels come in a variety of finishes, but this owner chose to go with a walnut-colored framing with a lacquer finish. The walnut-lacquer topcoat added depth and contrast to the space, considering the home had cream-colored walls. The finish was smooth and glossy, making the frame and glass panels easy to clean and maintain.

Having a focal point like this mini alcove area gives modern wine closet designs a striking appeal.

Behind these glass doors, you can find the metal racking system, also fully customized with metal rods and wooden brackets. All the materials used here were premium and high quality, ensuring they’re able to carry the weight of all bottles.

The racks are adjustable, which means the owners can easily customize the storage space as their wine collection grows and changes.

This design exudes the perfect blend of sophistication, class, and hospitality; a design not just for the owners to appreciate, but for their guests to be blown away as well.

The Power of a Quality, Commercial-Grade Cooling System

Wines when stale is like drinking a lost investment.  To preserve a wine’s value, it needs to maintain its flavor, quality, taste, smell, and consistency; that’s why we never want to fall short from investing in the right cooling system.

There are self-contained, ducted, and ductless systems.  To know what works best for your space, you’ll consider many factors, including but not limited to areas size, wall conditions, proximity of wine closet to external heat sources and bottle density.

Try zooming in on this photo and you’ll see the two cooling system registers on the ceiling!

For this new modern wine closet, the RMD 6600 by US Cellar Systems was the perfect refrigeration system. The unit follows a ducted mechanism where the evaporator was attached to the wine closet’s ceiling, and the condenser was placed outside. As long as there is enough ceiling/wall space to place ducting in, this kind of cooling system is favorable even for small wine cellars due to its quiet operation.

Additionally, a ducted system allows for even air distribution regardless of your wine room’s layout. With US Cellar System’s RMD 6600, every bottle inside this closet is exposed to the same temperature and humidity, and the owner gets to enjoy low energy bills!

Custom, Functional Glass Doors

Wine cellar doors are highly essential components of any wine storage space. When we say essential, they are not your ordinary glass doors like the ones you use in the shower. Glass wine cellar doors have insulating capacities that help keep humidity and temperature at constant levels.

Like insulated walls, wine cellar doors are designed to prevent moisture from forming inside the cellar, no matter how warm it gets outside. This is done by sealing air gaps around the door (weather stripping), using tempered glass, or using dual pane glass. Glass wine cellar doors are made with exterior-grade durability, which keeps them from breaking or cracking no matter the temperature difference inside and outside the cellar.

The glass door for this modern wine closet was also built with a stainless-steel frame, coated in black matte finish, which gives that modern “Millsime” vibe.

The glass used was tempered, dual-pane glass, which is both functional and practical, and allows the entire wine collection to be seen from outside. Truly a showstopper and conversation starter!

Modern wine closet designs are very much timeless and versatile nowadays. You can have them inside a traditionally-designed home, or inside an ultra modern residence.
