Project Overview of the Modern Residential Wine Room

When professional wine cellar makers begin talking about design ideas with their clients, they start with understanding their own personal style and the existing décor in the home. This client’s Richmond District home had both modern and contemporary elements integrated into the design and the team did a great job of complementing the modern aesthetic in the modern design of their wine room.

You can clearly see the content of the wine cellar from the outside thanks to all the glass panels that serve as walls and doors for the wine cellar. The glass component of this wine room adds charm to it. Moving on to the interior of the glass wine cellar, Steve used brushed chrome triple deep pegs from the Wine Cellar Designers Group into an acrylic white back panel. The peg racking, glass walls and white back panels are key elements that gives this modern glass wine cellar a very contemporary feel. The team then installed a 8000 WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount Cooling Unit. To further add more to the aesthetics, the vent of the cooling unit is hidden in the ceiling,  and none of the cables, lines and other unsightly parts of a refrigeration unit are visible.

The Wine Peg Racking System and the Contemporary Wine Room Lighting

Modern Wine Rooms and Metal Wine Racks
Modern wine rooms with triple deep peg racking can hold more bottles than the standard single deep racking.

The triple-deep, brushed metal finish wine pegs from IronWine Cellars really go well with the white back panel for this wine cellar. A single pair of metal wine peg racking systems can hold up to three wine bottles without the risk of wine bottles falling down. The rubber ring ensures bottles would have minimal to zero movement once they are placed on top of the peg racking. To further add more stability, these wine pegs are mounted securely on a custom-made white back panel.

The subtle lighting coming from back panel gives just the right amount of light to highlight the owner’s wine and spirit collection. A light panel was sandwiched by two ¾ inch acrylic boards to achieve this mellow lighting effect. Additionally, Steve built shelves exclusively for alcoholic drinks like whiskey, vodka and brandy. Light coming from the light panels passes through the content of these spirits. This adds emphasis to these intoxicating drinks without ruining their quality in the process.

The Cooling System of the Contemporary Wine Cellar

As previously mentioned, the team installed an 8000 WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount Cooling Unit for this home. Upon opening the wine cellar door, only the vent of the cooling system, housed in the ceiling, is visible. The team strategically placed the condensing unit on the roof of the house and the rest of the lines and ducting system on the soffit above the wine cellar. This gave the cooling unit a clean and minimalist appeal.
The cooling unit is set to 58°F. This is within the optimum range for storing wines, which is between 50-59°F. In San Francisco, the lowest temperatures ever recorded reached 27°F and the highest recorded temperature peaked at 105°F. These temperature extremes could potentially cause unwanted spoilage and premature aging of your wines. For this reason, if you’re thinking of building a wine cellar in your Richmond District home, it is advisable that you include a suitable cooling system in your plan.

Beautiful Modern Wine Room With Stunning LED Light Panels

An Obstacle Before the Team Started the Project

The modern wine room looked good and secure. But, before Steve and his team started with this project, they had to solve an obstacle in it. The area where the wine cellar was built was exposed to sunlight for the majority of the day. This presented some challenges for the wine cellar since the client wanted glass for the enclosure. Constant sun exposure could bring about unwanted temperature and humidity fluctuations and condensation inside the wine cellar.

Frameless glass is not a viable option for this situation. The heat from the sun would eventually penetrate the wine cellar. The cooling unit would run a lot longer, if not all the time. Then, the heat will also cause condensation in the glass. Not only will it obscure your view of your wine collection, but it will also potentially disturb the optimum humidity within your wine cellar. If left unchecked, this could cause damage to your wines and promote the growth of mold.

Steve used metal-framed double-paned glass panels to remedy this situation.  Double-paned, metal-framed panels have better seal than frameless glass panels. Owing to this type of glass panel, the cooling unit of the wine room can work efficiently, and the wine cellar won’t have any major condensation problems in it.

Modern Wine Room With Built-in Lighting Shelves
Steve built shelves exclusively to display spirits. When lighting from the base panel is turned on, it further adds emphasis to the alcoholic drinks as light passes through its content. Now that’s one innovative modern wine room!
