Designing and Building Modern Wine Walls: A Twin Peaks Feature

Modern Wine Walls With Glass Enclosure
This beautiful dining room is enhanced greatly by the addition of a custom glass-enclosed modern wine wall.

The dining room is one of the more noticeable areas in your home. It is in this area where you dine and socialize with your friends and family. It is where great ideas and timeless relationships are built. It’s one of the first few places a visitor will see they visit your home.

With that said, surely you want to leave something memorable for your guest every time they visit you. Luckily, displaying modern wine walls are one of the best ways to do that!

The Glass Residential Wine Cellar Project in Twin Peaks, San Francisco

Our sister store, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, was asked by a client to design and construct a residential modern wine wall to be added to the dining room of his Twin Peaks home in  San Francisco. The team’s experience and expertise were put to the test during the project. Everything was challenging and yet the team provided practical solutions for the project. The team was successful in transitioning the traditional dining room into a modern work of art. To see the joy and satisfaction coming from the client after the project was finished is priceless.

What were the obstacles and challenges while building the glass residential wine cellar?

Before starting the project, we have to consider that there was a post and bar counter within the planned area for the modern glass wine cellar. The team had to demolish the bar and the flooring to give way for the residential glass wine cellar. The limited space they had to work with also posed an impediment to the project. But the team finished the project successfully amidst all these obstacles. The Custom Wine Cellars San Francisco team always strives to provide innovative solutions for their clients. And for this project, the team has lived up to the expectations.

The Racking System Used for the Glass Modern Wine Wall

Vintage View Racking in Modern Wine Walls
Vintage View racking was the perfect choice for this modern wine wall.

The racking system was the simplest part of the building process for the wine cellar. The team used a Black Satin Vintage View Racking System for the modern wine wall.   This metal wine  cellar racks could hold up to a maximum of 900 bottles which includes storage for 33 magnum sized bottles on each end of the wine cellar.  A three-bottle deep rack was installed on the front, with the movable glass panels, and a one-bottle deep racks on the back.

Glass Panel Installed for the Twin Peaks Glass Wine Cellar

The team used a single pane frameless glass for the entire project.  They reinforced the glass panels using a u-channel. Additionally, the team added insulation materials in the u-channel to help in the insulation of the wine cellar

Two fixed, frameless glass panels were installed on the back, and 4 movable glass panels were used for the front and accessible side. The clearance for the doors is around 148 inches by 96 inches.

US Cellar Systems Custom Built a Cooling System for the Glass Residential Wine Cellar

The average temperature in San Francisco ranges from 45°F to 72°F, but in hot summers temperatures can go above 100°! The best storage temperature for wine is from 45°F to 64°F.  Anything beyond or under that range could potentially damage your wine collection. A cooling unit regulates temperature within that optimum range for your modern wine room. So, it’s imperative that you install one for all your glass wine walls.

The limited workspace they have work with is, indeed, a challenge for installing the cooling system. The team collaborated with Dan from US Cellar Systems, to create a customize cooling system that could fit within the limited space of the project.

Dining Room Modern Wine Wall Cooling System
A powerful US Cellar Systems cooling unit was custom fit for this incredible residential wine wall.

A LPQ 12000 TE Split Cooling System, from US Cellar Systems, was installed by the team. The cooling unit has 12,000 BTUs and 1 ½ horse power. The unit helps alleviate the insulation capability of the glass wine cellar. The  Twin Peaks team decided to keep the cooling unit within the soffit to keep it inconspicuous and for aesthetic purposes. Just imagine if there were wires and coils dangling throughout the cellar.

Insulating the Contemporary  Glass Wine Wall

Wine cellar refrigeration requires more than the appropriate cooling system. The team applied spray foam with vapor barrier in gaps within the U-channel and the soffit of the wine cellar. Spray foam application insulates the entire wine cellar from outside sudden temperature changes. San Francisco could get as hot as 105°F from June to August and as cold as 23°F from December to February annually. Humidity and temperature fluctuations is harmful to your wine collection if left uncheck.   Application of spray foam removes this risk.

Modern Wine Wall Basic Lighting Plan
Effective lighting for modern glass wine walls should be subtle, just enough to highlight your wines without drawing too much attention or creating too much heat.

Scattered strategically throughout the wine cellar are LED cans to give emphasis to the wine collection LED lights doesn’t emit any ultraviolet rays that could pose a threat to your wines. Ultraviolet rays could potentially shorten the storage life of your wines.  That’s the reason why we use LED lights for all our projects.
