Custom Wooden Wine Racks: The Secret to a Beautiful Rustic Wine Cellar Design
Our client for this rustic wine cellar is an eager wine collector who goes places to dig into different wine regions around the world and shares his knowledge with fellow wine enthusiasts. In his original home, he already had a wine cellar but wanted a better-looking one for his new residence. If you haven’t guessed yet, this rustic custom wine room was totally built from scratch inside a spare room.
When we plan a design, we always ask our clients what they currently have in their collection and what their plans are. The number of bottles you have and are planning to have will dictate the design and size of the racking. Like this client, considering he was a big wine collector, he already had more than a thousand bottles in his collection!

Unfinished Redwood to Enhance That Organic Vibe
In his new home, the client had a large room he wanted to turn or build into a wine cellar. Specifically, the room was 15’L x 12’W x 9’H in size, and the client wanted to mount wine racks on at least two sides of the room. The challenging part of this room was that it had an alcove on one side, which seemed a bit too small for a wine rack. However, since the Harvest team loves to take on challenges, they found a way to still utilize the space for wine storage.
Going back to the wood material used for this rustic wine cellar design, they opted for Redwood out of all the hardwood varieties. And instead of painting it with stain or lacquer, they found it best to maintain its natural surface and texture. The room also had cream-colored paint on the walls, so the relatively light color of Redwood gave a subtle contrast to the entire wooden wine cellar. They did learn that the client had plans to enhance his walls, so whatever he puts up on them, the neutral-colored Redwood wine racks would still look amazing.
Curved Wooden Wine Rack Is an Innovation to the Traditional Rustic Wine Cellar Design
Knowing that the room was rectangular, did you think that there was any curved wine rack? Well, yes, it does! And they were able to use it to enhance the look of the entire rack! From the pictures, it seems they installed one massive wine racking. But really, the rack is divided into three parts: the left side, the curved center, and the right side. They built a curved wine rack in the center, which smoothened the transition from the left to the right wine rack.
The curved wine rack had the same height as the other racks, so it looked like it was built as one. At the bottom, we built 7 rows of standard-750 slots, followed by a reveal row at the center (with a light valance), then another 7 rows of standard-750 slots on the top portions. The curved racks were actually a cost-saver for this rustic wine cellar design, and we were thankful that the owner approved our design.
The entire rack is 72” high and 13.5” wide, and these are the number of slots found in each storage configuration:
- Standard 750s – 560 bottles
- Vertical display shelves – 20 bottles
- X-cube lattice – 236 bottles
- Wood case – 48 bottles
- Lattice vertical display – 60 bottles
- Horizontal display lattice – 30 bottles
- Cardboard case – 48 bottles
Our Service Goes Beyond Constructing Wine Racks; We Also Consider the Right System for Organization
As a very enthusiastic wine collector, the client has wines from all over the world, some with the most interesting travel memories and stories. Wherever he flies, he always has a bottle he brings home. He has wines from France, Spain, Australia, Provence, Virginia, South Africa, Chile, Portugal, California, Argentina, Tuscany, and more! Since he wanted to recognize the wine easily, Harvest made sure to group the bottles according to the region and according to the type of wine.
One of his most memorable trips, though, was when he traveled to Australia — a wine collector’s dream. To remember this trip, he brought home a wine map of the country and used it as a centerpiece in his new wine cellar!
Apart from the main racks, the team also utilized the alcove area. They built a separate cabinet with shelves, sub-closing drawers, and overhead stemware racks where the owner could store all his wine glasses.
A Long-Lasting Wine Cooling System for Medium-Sized Wine Cellars
Wine cellars depend on a strong cooling system to keep the temperature wine-friendly. The way to choose a wine cooling system is similar to selecting an air conditioner for your bedroom, but with more requirements. For example, choosing a wine cooling system for a rustic wine cellar design is more than just knowing the size of the room. It also entails knowing how much wood will be in the room, how much insulation will be present, how much glass is in the wine cellar door (if applicable), and so on.
In the industry, we formally call this process a heat load assessment. It’s knowing how much heat will be present based on the materials used and how much heat we will need to “fight off” using a wine cooling system.
For this wine cellar, they decided that the WineGuardian 0018 was the most appropriate in terms of the room’s cooling requirement, the ease of installation, and the client’s budget. This cooling unit is a self-contained type of air conditioning unit that’s installed through the wall. This comes with a non-corrosive aluminum frame with stylized air vents, impressive machinery, and a digital display that will last longer if properly maintained.
Wine Cellar Flooring of Rustic Wine Room Designs
Rustic-themed wine cellars feature all-natural materials such as wood. To stick to the theme, they installed natural stone for the floors, particularly terracotta. Like wine racks, wine cellar floors can also come in different finishes and materials. Apart from terracotta floors, recycled oak barrels are also popular for rustic wine cellar designs. Just tell our team if you prefer this kind of flooring, and we will happily work on it for you!
