In the photos, you can see that the bottles are either displayed in a cork-forward position or an inclined, label-forward position. We decide only to have these two display styles to maximize the space. Combining plenty of display configurations is a great way to enhance the look of your wine racks. However, since the priority here was to maximize capacity, we only included two.
A Suitable Wine Cooling Unit for Tight Wine Cellars
The backbone of every well-built wine cellar is its insulation and cooling system. Without the proper insulation and air conditioning, a wine cellar will just be a common storage room. Wine cellars should be kept at a temperature between 45°F – 60°F, which should be the case 24/7, 365 days a year. Unlike standard rooms, the AC in wine cellars needs to be kept running all the time, so you need a wine cooling system that’s durable and commercial-grade.
To keep this wine cellar cool and humid, we went for the WhisperKOOL through-the-rack split wine system. It is a split-system cooling machine where the evaporator and condenser are separate. Also, a through-the-rack system is an AC that you can place within your wine racks without affecting its performance or structural integrity.
Through-the-rack systems are ductless, so you have more freedom to choose where to position your evaporator within your wine cellar. While some homeowners dislike seeing the cooling system inside the cellar, the owner here didn’t mind that the WhisperKOOL was visible since the unit had a classy enclosure.

Simple, Contemporary Wine Cellar Door for Minimalist Wine Cellars
To enter this wine room, people must open a wood-framed glass door. A glass door was an easy choice for this space because the room was relatively small. A glass door would open the space a little, allowing one to see inside the cellar without really going in. From the center of the door, the wooden wine racks are very obvious and look beautiful!
Wine cellar doors are also unlike your typical residential doors. Wine cellar doors need to be of exterior grade — the type of doors you usually see attached to the exterior walls of your home. This is because wine cellar doors will stand in between two different environments: the cold and humid inside environment of the cellar and the warmer, moisture-filled environment outside the cellar. Varying temperatures and humidity can affect the condition of a material. In the case of wood, it could cause warping. In the case of glass, it could promote condensation, which we don’t want to happen.
If you’re scouting for doors, go for manufacturers specializing in wine cellar doors, so you don’t have to worry about it notwithstanding the conditions. For glass, we always use tempered panes that are at least ½”-thick. If it is a frameless glass door, we line the glass edges with rubber gaskets or U-channels. But since the glass door here was framed with wood, we didn’t have to add weather stripping around the glass.
You can have a glass door like this and have it etched. Glass etching is a way to further personalize your wine cellar doors and add more character. Some homeowners even go for getting metal or iron into the glass, especially when they have a traditional or classic wine cellar!
